Having
been involved with the Cederberg Observatory, since 1982,
till 1999 when I retired, helping to develop it into the international
success it is today.
The roll-off roof observatory on the left, was sponsored by Space
Frontiers (Ltd.) directors,The Late "Douglas" H.J.P. Arnold and Audrey Arnold. Douglas was
a prominent Astro photographer
and the Director of "Sol Invictus", in England.
I retired early , to develop my passion into a profession and to continue
the education of the
general public regarding Astronomy. I further assist people in designing and building Observatories as well as equipping them, at extremely good prices, as I have no overheads to cover. ( See http://www. telescopeshop.co.za for Observatories, contact me directly on my cell 083 227 3144 or wjh1@absa.co.za)
My
personal interest in astronomy are Lecturing, Astro-photography, Comets
and Meteors and searching for elusive
Near Earth Objects and Potentially Hazardous Asteroids, as well
as Telescope Making. |

The World Heritage Site
The Kromdraai area is very special, as it is the oldest hominid sit in the world.
This area, due to its status as a World Heritage Site, is fairly free from
light pollution and invasive lighting, but great concern is felt with the uncontrolled housing developments encroaching upon the area.
This greatly enhances the night skies and faint objects are far more
easily observed, even under a
near full moon night, even with small telescopes.
Light pollution is a severe pollutant, severely affecting nocturnal
animals and the government
must enforce far stricter light polluting control measures.
( See
Dark Sky Association Paper)
This is now being enforced in the United States, as light pollution
is a waste of energy and natural resources.
Most children growing up in cities, have never seen the stars or the
Milky Way, because of light pollution.
I want to develop an observatory, into an institution
that
will actively contribute to astronomy, through public/scholastic education
programs, observations and
research work, that is at an acceptable professional level and will be recognised
by professional institutions, like the work done at the Cederberg Observatory.
Public shows are
done on a regular basis and relative information is available at 083 227 3144
As I mentioned, we gather at the farm where I live to do observations.
