Places of interest to stay, around the Observatory and the area of, The Cradle of Human Kind.  

Regular open night are held in the Cradle of Human Kind Area.

One Saturday Evening of the month, there is an open evening. We meet at a venue at 1800 and start with a short topical talk. Afterwards we do observing and the course attendees can apply their knowledge accumelated.

There are a couple of experienced astronomers that will assit with queeries and assist you in any manner they can. Be is setting up a scope, to read a star map or just to observe with them.

 

The course will be the basic Astronomy Course.

Places to Visit and Stay:

Kenjara Lodge

A lovely "Country English" pub environment, right on the Kromdraai River, with a strong tang of Africa. Fabulous hospitality and food !!!! Your hosts are Jack and Karin. See their site.

N'gomo Lodge

A beautiful environment with a Luxury Tented camp setup, with full kitchen facilities. A perfect place for church groups, Jamborees and Bird Club outings. Lecture and Braai area as well.

Glenburn Lodge

Extremely comfortable accommodation on the slopes of the Swartkops Berg, where the Crocodile River and the Blaaubank Spruit meet, and some fabulous wild trout fishing available. Beautiful walks along the river, with chalets.

Kloofzicht Lodge

Utterly spoil yourself rotten, with some luxurious International 5 Star Treatment. This is heaven on Earth. No words can do this place justice. Visit this site and see for yourself.

The Cradle

A beautiful restaurant with a collection of Stone Age tools on exhibition. The cottages by the river are serene and a fabulous area for the avid bird watcher.Have a look at this lovely piece of The Cradle. Just have patience, as the web site takes a while to load.

The Sterkfontein Caves.

The residence of Mrs/Mr Ples. This is where one of the oldest humanoid fossils ever was found, Mr or Mrs Ples. This area is rich in fossils and a "have to see". This is within 10kM form all the above areas and over night places.

Maropeng

Maropeng is a very special place in the cradle. All I can say, to do it justice, is look for yourself !!!!
